Lingerie Glossary

Adhesive Bra

A backless stick-on bra made with medical grade adhesive.

Baby doll

A short loose fitting negligee or nightgown that sometimes has formed cups and a loose fitting skirt that falls usually between the belly button and upper thigh in length. Similar in style to a chemise but looser fitting around the hip area. Panties are often included to make a complete lingerie set.

Back Closure Bra

A bra that's closure clasp is at the back, generally centrally at the base of shoulder blades.

Balconette Bra

A bra with little to no coverage that sits under a woman's breast thus lifting and enhancing appearance, cleavage and shape. The name was given to the bra as when looking at breasts from above, the bra was not visible, as if looking over a balcony. More revealing than a demi-bra and sometimes referred to as a shelf bra.

Bandeau Bra/Top

A simple, generally stretchy band of material that is worn around the breasts and back. Occasionally have built in cups.

Basque

A tight contoured fitting bodice style garment with garter straps, also known as a torsolette, that resembles a delicately constructed corset with little or no figure moulding compression.

Bikini Panty

A low cut panty that sits on the hip and gives full back and front coverage.

Bikini Set

A two-piece bra and panty lingerie set.

Bodice

The area of lingerie or clothing that covers the breasts.

Boning

Rigid supports stitched vertically into seams of lingerie such as corsets and bustier in order to give a thin and shapely look. Traditionally made of whale bone, hence the name, with modern day boning generally being made from plastic or thin strips of metal.

Body stocking

A form fitting nylon or nylon blend, often crotch less, one-piece garment that covers the torso, legs and sometimes arms. Designed to be both revealing and figure hugging, body stockings are a hosiery item similar in look and texture to stockings and tights, so stretch to give a perfect fit. Can be worn with or without underwear, and come in fabrics such as fishnet, industrial net, fence net, diamond net, lace, crochet and floral net to name but a few.

Bodysuit

A form fitting one-piece garment that covers the torso. Some styles are designed to cover the legs and arms too, which although still considered bodysuits, are most often referred to as body stockings.

Boob Out

A bra or lingerie garment that exposes the full breast. Also referred to as open cup, cup less or peek-a-boo.

Booty short

A low rise full coverage panty similar in style to a man’s trunks. A comfortable everyday underwear style also known as boy shorts and boy legs.

Boy leg

A full coverage low rise panty styled similarly to a man’s trunk style underwear. A comfortable everyday underwear style also known as boy shorts and booty shorts.

Boy short

A comfortable, yet sexy, full coverage low rise panty styled similarly to a man’s trunk style underwear. A great everyday underwear style also known as booty shorts and boy legs.

Bralette

A soft cup bra that is unlined and offers very light support.

Breast Petals

Shaped plain fabric patches that are affixed to a woman's breasts in order to cover the nipples and areola. Also known as nipple pasties, breast petals were designed in order to reduce nipple visibility or irritation when going braless.

Briefs

Traditional style panties that provide full coverage to the thigh and buttocks and fall at or just below the navel.

Bridal Garter

A traditional band of elasticised lace or fabric, usually up to a few inches in depth designed to sit around a stocking top beneath a wedding gown.

Bustier

A gartered corset style lingerie garment, with or without boning, that extends through the torso to either the waist or hips in order to create a contoured hourglass shape. Also known as a longline bra, some bustier are less structured and are soft in style without the usage of boning.

Cami Garter

A waist or hip length sleeveless top with attached leg garter straps that usually come as a set together with matching or co-ordinating panties. Generally, spaghetti strap or halter neck in style, with some featuring a sexy boob-out open bust.

Cami Top

More commonly known as a camisole, camisole tops are sleeveless tops that usually extends to the waist or hips in length and generally have thin, sometimes adjustable spaghetti straps. Some styles of camisole top come with a halter neckline.

Camisole

Sleeveless tops that usually extends to the waist or hips in length and generally have thin spaghetti straps which are sometimes adjustable, but occasionally come with a halter neckline. Also known as a cami top, camisoles come in all types of fabric, but are generally made from soft and pretty laces and mesh and come as part of a set together with matching or co-ordination panties.

Camisole Strap

A wide shoulder strap that appears to be an extension of the cup. Camisole straps don't dig into skin in the way as spaghetti straps tend to on some women.

Chemise

A loose-fitting sleeveless garment, generally upper thigh length. Traditionally designed lacking definition at the waist, however, more modern designs are sexier and contoured to a woman's form. Most commonly have spaghetti straps, but also come in halter neck and off the shoulder designs. Sometimes referred to as a slip dress or mini dress, and come with or without panties.

Cleavage

The partial exposure of the separation between a woman's breasts.

Cleavage Enhancing Bra

A bra that contains angled padding or inserts that push the breast inwards and upwards towards the centre of a woman's chest, giving the appearance of increased cleavage.

Contour Bra

A pre-moulded bra with a thin layer of foam to shape the breast and prevent nipple visibility. As well as offering coverage and support, contour bras add smoothness, definition and a rounder symmetrical look without increasing bust size.

Control Top

The slimming stretchy waistband area of panties and hosiery that smoothes the shape of the bum, hips and tummy.

Convertible Bra

A bra with straps that can be attached in various formations in order to offer versatility with different clothing styles. Strap formations generally include regular back, strapless, halter neck, criss-cross and one shoulder. Also known as a multi-way bra.

Corset

A tight fitting, usually boned body enhancing garment that generally features back lacing that is pulled tight around the midriff area in order to create the perfect hourglass figure by cinching the waistline whilst pushing up the breasts.

Crop Top

A very short t-shirt or top that sits just below the breasts.

Crotch less Tights or Pantyhose

Form fitting one-piece nylon or nylon blend hosiery covering the foot through to the waist with the crotch area removed.

Cup less

A bra or lingerie garment that exposes the full breast. Also referred to as open cup, boob-out or peek-a-boo.

Décolletage

The upper part of a woman's torso between her waist and neck, which includes the neck, shoulders, back and chest.

Demi-Cup Bra

A bra that offers half to three quarter breast coverage and enhances cleavage and uplift. Generally, covers about 1 inch above the nipple and has shoulder straps that sit at the outer edge of the cup.

Denier

The weight and thickness of nylon yarn used for hosiery lines such as stockings and tights. The lower the denier number, the sheerer the fabric.

Dressing Gown

A loose open fronted gown with a belt that is worn over nightwear. Also referred to as a bathrobe or housecoat.

Enclosed Waistband

A waistband that features a hidden elastic strip that has been covered in the same fabric used to make the garment.

Fashion Tape

A double sided highly sticky tape that can be used to give a little support to the bust in place of a bra, or to hold your bust/clothing in place when wearing a revealing outfit or dress. Also known as tit tape, boob tape or toupee tape.

Floating Underwire

A length of underwire that doesn't fully extend to the edge of the bra in order to stop the wire from digging into your side.

Flutter Panty

A panty that is loose around the legs, giving a flutter effect.

Fly

The opening pouch constructed of two overlapping panels found at the front of certain styles of underwear.

Footless Body stocking

A body stocking that finishes at the ankle, thus exposing the foot.

Footless Tights

Tights or pantyhose that finish at the ankle, thus exposing the foot.

Front Closure Bra

A bra that's closure clasp is positioned as the centre front gore between the breast.

Full Busted

A bust of above average proportions.

Full Coverage Bra

A bra that covers the entire breast and is designed to offer maximum support. Perfect style for large busted women.

Full Figure

Garments designed to better fit women with above average bust and waist measurements. Also known as plus or queen size, full figure garments generally fit women of a UK size 16 and upwards.

G-String

A panty with a thin elastic string that sits between exposed buttocks. Offers less coverage that a thong panty.

Garter-belt

A lingerie strap worn around the waist that has attached straps with clips on the ends, two at the front and two at the back, otherwise known as garter straps. Also referred to as suspender belts, garter belts are used for the purpose of holding up stockings.

Garter Straps

Straps that hang from garter belts from which stockings are held up.

Gartini

Panties or thongs with leg garter straps attached. Gartini's give the sexy look of classic suspender belt and panty sets, but the freedom and comfort of having just one garment to contend with. Many gartini's have detachable garter straps, so can we worn with or without stockings.

Gel Bra

A bra which contains cup inserts filled with liquid gel.

Girdle

A close fitting undergarment that extends from the waist to below the hip. Girdles are generally made from stretch fabric and contain support boning.

Gore

Central bra fabric that connects the two cups of a bra.

Gown

A figure skimming ankle or floor length negligee or nightgown. Some modern style long gowns are also designed to be worn as a sexy dress. Generally, have spaghetti straps or halter neckline and some feature front or side splits.

Halter Neck

Lingerie or a garment that features straps or neckties that fasten behind the neck leaving the shoulders and back area bare.

Half Cup Bra

A partial cup bra that offers about half breast coverage.

Halter Bra

A bra that fastens behind the neck. Many convertible or multi-way bras incorporate a halter neck feature.

Hidden Waistband

A waistband featuring an elastic strip covered in the same fabric used to make the garment.

High Cut Panty

A panty with full rear coverage and high cut leg openings that are designed to make your legs look longer.

High Rise

Panties or clothing with a waistband that sits above your natural waistline.

High Waist

Lingerie, panties or clothing with a waistband that sits well above your natural waistline.

Hipster

Panties, shorts or trousers that sit low on the hips.

Hold Ups

Thigh highs or stockings with an elastic or silicone gripper stitched into the top in order that they hold up or stay up without the aid of suspender or garter straps. Also referred to as stay ups.

Hosiery

A collective term used for all nylon or nylon blend garments designed to stretch over the legs or body in order to give a perfect figure hugging fit. Products that fall within this category are body stockings, bodysuits, stockings, thigh highs, tights and pantyhose.

Inseam

The vertical inner leg seam on the legs of a pair of pants or underwear with longer legs.

Invisible Waistband

A waistband featuring a hidden elastic strip that has been covered in the same fabric used to make the garment.

Kimono

Traditionally from Japan, a kimono is a wide sleeved robe with a belt generally made from silks and satins.

Knee Highs

Form fitting nylon or nylon blend hosiery covering for the foot through to the knee. Come in many colours and styles, with the most popular being the plain opaque knee highs often used in sexy school girl bedroom role play.

Knickers

Women's underwear or lingerie designed to be worn around the crotch area.

Leg Garter

A band of elasticised fabric or lace, usually up to a few inches in depth designed to sit around a stocking top. Originally used to stop stocking slippage, but in more recent years to dress up a sexy lingerie set or traditionally as a bridal garter beneath a wedding gown.

Leggings

Opaque or microfiber tight, form fitting trousers.

Liquid Bra

A bra which contains cup inserts filled with liquid gel or water.

Long Line Bustier

A boned corset styled lingerie garment with garters that extends through the torso to the hips in order to create a contoured hourglass shape. Also referred to as a longline bra, some bustier styles are designed without the usage of boning giving a softer, less structured appearance.

Low Back Bra

A bra with narrow wings or a u-shaped back. Some ultra-low back bras have a wrap closure that fastens around the waist area.

Low Rise

Underwear or clothing with waistbands that sit below your natural waistline.

Merry Widow

A one-piece garment that is a combination of a light corset and a brassiere and often has leg garters attached. Generally, come as a set with a matching panty or thong.

Micro Mini Skirt

An extremely short skirt that either just covers the buttocks, or shows a cheeky little glimpse of them.

Mid Rise

Clothing or lingerie that sits on or about your natural waistline.

Mini Dress

A thigh length garment, generally figure skimming, that comes in many variations of styles including classic spaghetti strap, halter neck, plunge neck, off the shoulder, strappy, cut-out and ruffled hem. Sometimes referred to as a chemise or slip dress, and come with or without panties.

Mini Skirt

A shorter styled skirt with a hemline above the knees. Mini's sit about half way up the thighs and normally hang no longer than 4 inches below the buttocks.

Minimal Coverage

A description used for lingerie or underwear that doesn't provide any rear coverage, such as a thong or G-string.

Moulded Cup Bra

A shaped bra that is created by heat-shaping fabric over a breast shaped mould. Moulded cup bras are not padded, and can be both seamless and seamed.

Multi-Way Bra

A bra with straps that can be attached in various formations in order to offer versatility with different clothing styles. Strap formations generally include regular back, strapless, halter neck, criss-cross and one shoulder. Also known as a convertible bra.

Negligee

A flowing lingerie robe made from delicate fabric.

Nightwear

Clothing designed to be worn in the bedroom or whilst sleeping. Also referred to as sleepwear.

Nipple Pasty

Shaped patches that are affixed to a woman's s breasts by adhesive in order to cover the nipples and areola. Also known as nipple tassels, pasties come in a variety of colours and are very often sequin or diamante covered with sexy centre tassels. Designed to be worn with sexy lingerie, shelf bras being favourite, or as is with just a smile.

Open Cup

A bra or lingerie garment that fully or partially exposes breast. Also referred to as cup less, boob-out, split cup or peek-a-boo.

Padded Bra

A bra that that contains thickened cup lining or shaped inserts. Designed to visually increase a woman's bust size, without significantly increasing cleavage.

Panty

Women's lingerie or underwear designed to be worn around the crotch area.

Pantyhose

Form fitting nylon or nylon blend hosiery covering for the foot through to the waist. More commonly known as tights within the UK. Available in many styles and colours, some crotch less in design, and others may have a built in panties. Originally designed to remove visible lines sometimes caused by stockings and suspenders.

Peek-A-Boo

A bra or lingerie garment that has split or fully open cups in order to partially or fully expose the breasts. Also referred to as open cup or split cup.

Peignoir

A dressing gown made of very thin fabric designed to be worn over lingerie. Often comes with a matching robe.

Petite Figure

Garments designed to better fit women with smaller than average bust, waist and height measurements.

Petticoat

A woman's underskirt that hands independently from the waist and is designed to sit beneath clothing such as skirts or dresses either to reduce visible lines, or to create a more pleasing shape or structure.

Plunge Bra

A bra with angled cups and an open and lowered gore, allowing for lower and increased cleavage. Perfect for dresses and tops with a deep décolleté or plunging neckline.

Plunge Front

A deep cut neckline that reveals more of a woman's décolletage. Some extreme plunge necklines can end as low as just below the waistline.

Plus Size

Garments designed to better fit women with above average waist and bust measurements. Also known as full figure or queen size, plus size garments generally fit women of a UK size 16 and upwards.

Push-Up Bra

A bra that contains angled padding or inserts that push the breast inwards and upwards towards the centre of a woman's chest, giving the appearance of increased cleavage.

Queen Size

Garments designed to better fit women with above average bust and waist measurements. Also known as plus size or full figure, queen size garments generally fit women of a UK size 16 and upwards.

Racer Back Bra

A bra with V or T shaped shoulder straps between the shoulder blades. Great bra for vest tops that are cut in at the shoulder blades.

Rise

A term used to describe the height at which a waistband sits.

Robe

A loose, sometimes floor length nightwear garment often worn over sexy lingerie or a gown. Sometimes referred to as a peignoir, dressing gown or sleepwear shirt.

Seamed Cup Bra

A bra with visible seams. Seamed cup bras generally offer more support and shape than seamless cups bras.

Seamless Bra

A bra with no visible cup seams in order to create a smooth appearance beneath clothing. Also known as a t-shirt bra, and perfect for clingy tops and thin fabrics.

Sheer Bra

A translucent fashion bra that displays a woman's nipples.

Shelf Bra

An underwire bra that supports only a portion of the underside of the breast, pushing it upward, leaving the nipple and areola exposed. Also referred to as an open-cup, cup less, half or quarter cup bra.

Short

A lingerie panty similar in style to woman’s shorts or hots pants.

Shorty

A full coverage low rise panty styled similarly to a man’s trunk style underwear. A great everyday underwear style also known as booty shorts, boy shorts and boy legs.

Silicone Bra

A bra which contains cup inserts filled with silicone gel.

Skirtini

A mini skirt with leg garter straps attached. Many skirtini's come with detachable garter straps so they can also be worn without stockings, and some come with thongs or panties attached.

Sleepwear

Clothing designed to be worn while sleeping or in the bedroom. Also referred to as nightwear.

Slip Dress

A thigh length garment designed to contour a woman's form. Generally, have spaghetti straps and are sometimes referred to as a chemise or mini dress. Sometimes sold as a set which includes panties.

Soft Cup Bra

A traditional bra that contains no underwire.

Spaghetti Strap

A very thin shoulder strap used for clothing such as camisoles, crop tops, dresses and gowns.

Standard Size

Garments generally designed to fit a woman of average sizing of UK size 14 and below.

Stay Ups

Stockings or thigh highs with a silicone or elastic gripper stitched into the top banding in order to make them grip the leg in order that they stay up or hold up without the aid of garter or suspender straps. Also referred to as hold ups.

Stockings

Form fitting nylon or nylon blend hosiery covering for the foot through to the upper thigh designed to be worn with a garter belt, suspender belt or gartered lingerie. Sometimes referred to as hose or thigh highs, stockings come in numerous colours and styles including various sheer deniers, opaque's, fishnets, laces and many fashion designs, with or without back seam. Generally plain or lace topped, with some featuring a hidden silicone gripper designed to be worn without the aid of suspender or garter straps, commonly referred to as hold ups or stay ups.

Strapless

A garment or lingerie that has no shoulder straps.

Strapless Bra

A bra with no straps that relies on an extra wide band for support. Perfect for dresses or tops that partially or fully expose a woman's shoulders.

String Bikini Panty

A skimpier styled bikini panty with a front and back panel joined together at the sides by thin ribbons or elastic strings.

Suspender Belt

A lingerie strap worn around the waist that has attached straps with clips on the ends, two at the front and two at the back, otherwise known as suspender straps. Also referred to as garter belts, suspender belts are used for the purpose of holding up stockings.

Suspender Strap

Strap that hang from suspender belts from which stockings are held up.

Suspender Body stocking

Form fitting nylon or nylon blend one-piece hosiery with the crotch, backside and hip areas removed in order to give the look and feel of a simple camisole or bustier top and stockings.

Suspender Tights or Pantyhose

Form fitting one-piece nylon or nylon blend tights or pantyhose with the crotch, backside and hip areas removed. Some suspender tights have just a simple band style waistband and are joined to the leg by simple garter straps, often in lace, which give the look and feel of wearing a garter or suspender belt and stockings, whilst eliminating the visible lines that can be caused by them.

T-Shirt

A button less, and generally collarless top of varying lengths. Usually have a rounded or V-shape neckline and have cap, short, elbow or long length sleeves. Sometimes referred to as a Tee.

T-Shirt Bra

A seamless cupped bra with light padding in order to reduce nipple visibility and give a smooth look under clingy or lightweight fabrics.

Tanga Panty

A panty that generally has a triangular front and back with elastic sides. Offers less coverage than a traditional panty, but more than a thong.

Tank Top

A sleeveless t-shirt or top.

Tap Pants

A short with loose fitting legs that are usually cut higher on the sides.

Tassel Pasties

Shaped patches with centre tassels that are affixed to a woman's s breasts by adhesive in order to cover the nipples and areola. Also known as nipple tassels, pasties come in a variety of colours and are very often diamante or sequin covered. Perfect with sexy lingerie - perfect without!

Teddies

A one-piece teddy with leg garters attached. Some leg garters are detachable so teddies can be worn with or without co-ordinating stockings.

Teddy

A garment that has the appearance of either a one-piece camisole and panties or a joined bra and panty lingerie set. Come with all styles of back panty, but most often with thong or string back. Teddies come in many different styles and fabrics, and sometimes with garter straps. Some teddies offer more coverage, whilst others leave less to the imagination.

Tee

An alternative name for a t-shirt.

Thigh Highs

Form fitting nylon or nylon blend hosiery covering for the foot through to the mid-thigh designed to be worn with a suspender belt, garter belt or sexy gartered lingerie. Other than its very slightly shorter mid-thigh length, thigh highs are pretty much the same in design as standard upper thigh length stockings. Come in many sheers, nets, laces and fashion designs, both plain or lace topped, with or without a back seam. A hidden silicone or elastic gripper is stitched into the top of some thigh highs in order that they stay up or hold up without the aid of garter or suspender straps.

Thong

A panty with a thin, sometimes shaped strip of fabric that sits between exposed buttocks. offers slightly more coverage that a G-string panty.

Tights

Form fitting nylon or nylon blend hosiery covering for the foot through to the waist. More commonly known as pantyhose in the US. Available in many styles and colours with some tights being crotch less in design, whilst others may have a built in panty. Tights were originally designed for comfort, ease of usage, and the avoidance of unsightly lines beneath clothing but have become a real fashion accessory over recent years with all the funky new designs and prints now available.

Triangle Bra

A bra with triangular shaped cups that are generally attached to a thin bra base which gathers together like a drawstring. Triangle bras can sometimes be padded but are generally wireless.

Tube Dress

A sleeveless form fitting tube shaped dress that sits under the arms and around the torso. Come in various lengths, including mini and long tube dresses.

Tube Top

A sleeveless form fitting tube shaped top that sits under the arms and around the torso. Also referred to as a boob tube.

Underwire Bra

A bra that has a semi-circular strip made from metal, plastic or resin stitched into the fabric beneath each cup, thus helping to support the breast.

Vest

A sleeveless top of varying lengths that usually have a rounded or V-shape neckline.

Waist Clincher

A half corset styled garment, also known as a waspie, that sits below the bust and around the waistline. Cinchers generally contain soft plastic stiffeners or boning and usually have back lacing that is pulled in tight in order to make the waist appear smaller.

Waspie

More commonly known as a waist clincher, a waspie is a half-corset styled garment that sits below the bust and around the waistline in order to give the illusion of a smaller waistline.

Water Bra

A bra which contains cup inserts filled with water.

Wings

The side panels on a bra that attach the cups to the rear closure.
